In a world where cars with poor fuel efficiency are being taxed (e.g. the German CO2 tariff), even sports cars need to be environmentally sound. In response to the challenge, Honda developed a hybrid sports car powertrain that is fuel efficient and low on emissions, yet provides a high level of driving enjoyment. This original powertrain gives the J-VX the best characteristics of both Fun Creations and Thoughtful Creations. Besides offering the equivalent of over 30km/liter fuel efficiency (10.15 mode), the J-VX achieves among the world's lowest emission rates thanks to its 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder direct injection gasoline engine with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system. The IMA system features a slim electric motor that is connected with the engine and functions as a supplemental power source during acceleration. During deceleration, the motor converts the physical energy of car movement into stored electricity. In this way, the IMA system enables ultra-low fuel consumption and cleaner exhaust gas. This unique combination of hybrid powertrain and continuously variable Honda Multi-Matic transmission also results in amazingly smooth acceleration unlike anything experienced before. Moreover, the compact, super-light body and powertrain combine to offer the kind of quick, agile handling only available in lightweight sports cars.
